Book Shelf: The Winter Sea

The Winter Sea by Susanna Kearsley

I picked up this book on the recommendation of fellow fans of Diana Gabaldon’s “Outlander” series. I haven’t blogged about “Outlander” yet because I honestly don’t know what to say. I think about the characters all the time and feel so connected to the story… It is incredible! Onto the meat of this post, “The Winter Sea” has the same kind of mix of great, authentic historical fiction, realistic fiction, and a touch of fantasy. A crazy combination, but it works.

The book tells the simultaneous stories of Carrie, an author researching and writing a book about the 1708 Rising in Scotland and her ancestor Sophia who is living the story. Carrie’s life strangely reflects that of Sophia in that she can remember things that happened to Sophia as if they happened to her. Both characters (of course!) deal with difficult romantic relationships, but Sophia’s is much more dramatic. I won’t give away the ending but it was a huge surprise! I can’t wait to try more from this author as I keep working my was through the “Outlander” series. Read any good books lately?
